Belonging To You Book 2
Charlotte blinked furiously as Stephanie Thayer kept Drew in her embrace. She could only faintly hear sounds of applause filling the room. It was as if she was underwater, drowning fast.
“Charlie? Hey. You okay?”
Maryanne’s free arm, the one that Charlotte wasn’t clutching for dear life, found its way around her shoulders. Charlotte couldn’t look at her. All she could focus on was Drew, the man who’d been in her arms just hours before, locking lips with the fiancée he somehow forgot to mention in between making love to her. The fact that his entire body seemed stiff as Stephanie ran her hands down his back did nothing to soften the blow. Stephanie finally let him go, and she turned to the crowd. As she drank in the cries of congratulations, Drew followed her gaze.
And then he met Charlotte’s eyes.
Drew appeared stunned by her presence. Charlotte had done such a good job of explaining her opposition to the festivities, and for one second, he actually appeared betrayed by her broken word. Charlotte stared at him hard, and Drew’s face went red at the reality of being caught in the act with the boss’s daughter. He wiped his upper lip and looked about in every direction. He was probably imagining an escape, but there was nowhere to go in a room full of so many people, and Stephanie held his arm so tightly that he had to stay at center stage.
Charlotte’s eyes narrowed into a cold glare. She could feel the beginnings of tears, but she fought them back. There was no way she would give him that satisfaction.
“Charlie?”
Maryanne was still waiting for an answer as Charlotte watched Drew blush and sweat as Thayer patted his back proudly. All that time, to Baltimore, in Baltimore, inside him, and back again, Charlotte had assumed that he was trying to use her, outmaneuver her, in a business sense. She had let her guard down when she finally trusted him on that front. Everything that came after was because he desired her in other ways. She was flattered. She reciprocated. And she’d even told herself that it was the start of something real, and the idea excited her so much that she’d ditched her ready-made excuses to get back to his side. It had never occurred to her that she was a diversion before he returned to the princess and her throne. If Charlotte hadn’t flipped the script, he probably would have said goodbye to sweet Stephanie with promises that they’d brunch the next day, and then he would have come to Charlotte with promises that he would never honor. And Charlotte would have believed him. Even now, even face-to-face with who and what he truly was, a small part of her still wanted to.
She felt like a fool.
“I think you need to sit, Charlie.”
Charlotte was limp as Maryanne guided her to one of the nearby tables and settled her behind a plate of seared salmon that made her stomach churn. Maryanne saw her gag, and she pushed the dish aside.
